Since today is National Margarita Day
Since today is National Margarita Day, I figured I’d share a low calorie recipe for Margaritas so those of us on a diet can partake in the celebrations without feeling guilty. Most diet and weight loss tips recommend staying away from booze, wine, and beer all together thanks to the incredible amount of empty calories consumed after even just a couple drinks. While it is a good idea to stay away from empty calories when you’re trying to lose weight, I still think that diets that don’t allow for a little wiggle room are destined to fail. Figuring out how to keep a diet fun by finding great low-calorie options for your favorite foods and beverages is the best way to stay on track.
Since tequila doesn’t run in a low-calorie option, the only way to cut back from the typical 500-1500 calorie margarita options you can usually expect at a restaurant is to carefully select your mixers. Here’s a great recipe I’ve found that cuts down on the calories coming from sugar and corn syrup laden traditional margarita mixers significantly:
Traditional Blended Marg (Appr. 200-300 calories)
6-8 Ice Cubes
Kosher Salt (for rimming the glass)
1-2 Shots of Tequila (Depending on how strong you prefer your drinks, keep in mind a shot is about 100 calories)
½ Shot Cointreau
1 ½-2 Tablespoons Splenda or Stevia (Depending on how sweet you want your Marg)
½ Cup of fresh lime juice
Rim your glass by circling a lime wedge around the edge before dipping it in the salt. Dump the rest of the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth and slightly frothy. Pour into your prepared glass and garnish with a lime.
